Asphalt Shingle Installation

“Composition roof shingles are a reliable, durable, and easy to maintain roofing product”

Asphalt shingles are not only one of the most affordable roofing systems on the market today they are one of the most watertight and waterproof roofing systems available. In addition to a variety of style, color and definition, it gives homeowners the opportunity to add their own unique touch to their home. Asphalt shingles are commonly used on steep slope residential roofs consisting of a slope greater than 2/12 and they are made up of 2 different materials.

Asphalt shingles come in two different materials, organic and fiberglass. Organic shingles are made up a paper layer with an asphalt coating, these are a popular shingle. Fiberglass shingles are  made up a fiberglass mat instead of a paper mat, making them more durable to impacts and fire resistance. Fiberglass shingles are layered with a granule on top to protect the shingle in addition to newer technologies available today, the granules offer a higher solar reflectance and keeps your attic and house cooler.

Reasons Homeowners Choose Asphalt Shingles

Shingle roofs are a popular choice for residential and commercial buildings because they offer several advantages such as:

  • Lightweight: Because asphalt shingles add very little weight to a roof, most homes are already equipped to have them installed
  • Inexpensive: Asphalt shingles are among the most affordable roofing options. Though the cost is just a fraction of the price of other types of roofing, asphalt shingles will still promise high durability and a long lifespan.
  • Ease of Installation: Unlike other types of roofing, asphalt shingle installation can be done quickly and easily. Some asphalt roofing jobs can be done in a single day.
  • Color Choices: There is a surprising amount of variety when it comes to asphalt shingles. Between colors, textures, and patterns, all of your needs can be met.
  • Durability: Asphalt shingles are known for their durability. They are durable enough that they do not require extensive regular maintenance like other roofing materials will often need. Shingle roofs are made from asphalt, which is a strong and durable material that can withstand extreme weather conditions such as wind, rain, and hail.
  • Low maintenance: Shingle roofs require minimal maintenance and are easy to repair if damaged.
  • Energy efficiency: Some types of shingle roofing, such as cool colored roof shingles, reflect solar heat and can help reduce energy costs by keeping a building cooler during the summer months.

Asphalt Shingles Pro & Cons

Pros

  • Popular and Affordable: Asphalt shingles are the most common and most affordable shingle type when considering price and ease of maintenance and installation.
  • Lightweight-Fire-Resistant
  • Quality Lifespan: you should get around 80-85% of the life span out of an asphalt roof. That means you can expect to get about 15-20 years out of your 3-tab shingle roof and 15-30 years out of your dimensional shingle, depending on the weather.
  • Variety: There are many options of colors, styles, and sizes. Asphalt shingles can be modified to look various ways, even like other kinds of shingles such as wood, slate, or tile.
  • Energy-Efficient: Asphalt shingles can have cool-roof technology to reduce the heat absorbed by your roof and lower your energy bills.
  • Low-Maintenance: Damaged shingles are inexpensive and easy to repair or replace.
  • Easy Installation: Installation is shorter, simpler, and the least expensive of any kind of shingle.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Asphalt shingles were once bad for the environment, but now they have much less of a negative impact because new asphalt shingles can be layered directly on top of old ones; they are becoming recyclable as well.

Cons

  • Less Durable: Asphalt shingles are prone to weather damage and don’t have as long of a lifespan as other shingle types.
  • Not Meant for Flat Roofs: Flat roofs aren’t a good match for asphalt shingles because they will wear out from weathering much more quickly than on a steeper-sloped roof.
